Criteria

The criteria that guide which buildings are nominated for this new list are non-restrictive. Any building that a resident of Nairobi considers to be valuable to them is eligible.

The public are encouraged to consider all types of buildings – residential, commercial, institutional – and from all time periods, running up to the present day.

The project steering committee – a public-private leadership group comprised of experts in the design, development and heritage fields – has also developed some criteria to guide the public when considering which buildings to nominate. These include:

  • Great architecture and aesthetics
  • Uniquely Kenyan or African architecture
  • High quality construction and/or use of innovative technology
  • Representative of a particular period in history
  • Representative of the work of a noteworthy architect or designer
  • Environmentally friendly or 'Green design'.

For examples of different buildings that represent these criteria, please see the side bar.
