The public are encouraged to consider all types of buildings – residential, commercial, institutional – and from all time periods, running up to the present day.
The project steering committee – a public-private leadership group comprised of experts in the design, development and heritage fields – has also developed some criteria to guide the public when considering which buildings to nominate. These include:
- Great
architecture and aesthetics

Uniquely
Kenyan or African architecture

High
quality construction and/or use of innovative technology
-
Representative
of a particular period in history
-
Representative
of the work of a noteworthy
architect or designer
-
Environmentally
friendly or 'Green design'.
